Purchasing Instead of Borrowing

Discover the results of my library's eight years of purchasing books through ILL using ILLiad's various features. Background on purchase-on-demand programs will be provided to establish that this is a common and best practice. The workflow used at my library will be explained and variations used elsewhere reviewed. I will then quickly review the results of my library's purchases: patron distribution, call number ranges, collections, formats, price, speed, vendors, etc. Points for discussion include workflow considerations, what constitutes value and success in such a program, statistics calculations, and obtaining buy-in from other departments and one's own staff.

Purchasing books is a standard part of ILL now. ILLiad provides means to customize the workflow through custom queues, email routing, flexible database fields, flags, and multiple add-ons to make purchasing materials and communicating with others in the library about purchases easy.
