First Sale or Last Leg?


Between emerging open access models of scholarly publishing and the recent Google Books ruling Interlibrary Loan faces a long look in the mirror over long term viability. Mirrors hung on walls or tales are great foundational tools, and how the Doctrine of First Sale is the foundational premise of libraries is most acutely reflected in Interlibrary Loan services. This presentation will argue First Sale enables libraries to be self-defining organizations, and that Interlibrary Loan specifically demonstrates what this means to library clientele.
